The Garden Route Botanical Garden boasts a remarkable array of flora and fauna biodiversity, highlighting the unique ecological characteristics of the Southern Cape region. Spanning over 16 hectares, the garden showcases diverse habitats, including fynbos, forest, and wetland ecosystems, each teeming with life and contributing to the overall ecological balance. These varied environments support a rich variety of wildlife and are home to more than 1,000 species, making it a vital sanctuary for local biodiversity.

Among the remarkable inhabitants of the garden, records indicate the presence of more than 150 bird species, providing a vibrant backdrop of avian activity and songs. This diverse bird-life includes everything from small songbirds to larger birds of prey, making it a prime location for birders. Additionally, the garden is home to more than 30 species of reptiles and frogs, which play crucial roles in the ecosystem as both predators and prey.

Insect life flourishes within the garden, with nearly 400 species recorded, including about 40 dragonflies and damselflies and nearly 60 different butterflies. These insects not only contribute to pollination but also serve as vital food sources for many of the bird species.

About 40 species of arachnids have been recorded. These creatures, including spiders and scorpions, play an essential role in the ecosystem by helping to control insect populations and contributing to the overall health of the garden’s habitats.

More than 100 species of fungi can be found throughout the garden, playing crucial roles in nutrient cycling and soil health. In addition to the fungi, the garden features over 500 plant species, most of which are indigenous to the Southern Cape region.

The combination of these habitats and species fosters a dynamic and resilient ecosystem, allowing visitors to experience the beauty and complexity of the region’s natural heritage.
