This year fifteen young people from RealStart were introduced to environmental training sessions as part of the Boardened Horizons programme.
Marzanne Carelse, WESSA’s GroenSebenza intern has developed and implemented this programme. Each group attends 3 sessions, during which Marzanne focuses on empowering them with a greater understanding of the environment and their place in it. Each group participates in this programme for a weekly 2 hour session at the Garden Route Botanical Garden’s Moriarty Environmental Centre.
Environmental training session 1 taught them about ecosystems and the importance thereof. In the second session students got introduced to ways through which one can use citizen science, i.e environmental management tools that can also be seen as tools that the ordinary person out there can use to test the turbidity of water. During the last session, the group also had the opportunity to plant their own vertical vegetable gardens in a recycled plastic bottle. Each student then took their garden home with the intention of sharing this idea with their communities.
