Ready to plant trees in Rosedale

Rosedale is a barren, sprawling and relatively new township across the N2 highway on the way to Pacaltsdorp. A number of organisations and individuals have joined forces to plant trees for the residents who don’t have shade in their yards, for children who have not experienced the thrill of climbing a tree and have had no birds to wake them up in the morning or herald out the day at dusk.

Involved are Data Dot, sponsors of the trees and compost, the Garden Route Botanical Garden which continues with its quest to “green” as much of George as possible, even while under severe financial pressure.  Also involved is a new organization called Simply Green, with the motto “Go Green George,”  which is a new environmental activist group established in George recently. It is working in collaboration with a similar organization, the newly formed Trapsuutjies of Oudtshoorn. Both organisations will be seen to actively restore the garden on the Garden Rout and preserve the fragile and much threatened environment in the Little Karoo.

Local attorney, Brian Musto and his wife Joan, who spearheaded a similar project in Touwsranten, offered some useful advice on how to approach such a daunting operation and also visited  Rosedale to explain to the residents what was involved. About 80 households were called on for a greet and meet session on Saturday morning (7 June) and their responses were extremely positive when requested to dig a square hole to a specific  size (500 mm deep x 400mm wide) in their yard, this in preparation for the tree planting session on Saturday 14 June starting at 09h00.

Local residents, Julian Klassen, assisted in earlier preparations and Philidia Pieterse introduced the small nervous group to her neighbors and acquaintances further down the streets in order to get the ball rolling.

Officials from the George municipality have been invited to attend the tree planting ceremony and all members of the public are welcome to attend. All you have to bring are your blessings and prayers that the trees will flourish because the residents have taken it upon themselves to nurture the young saplings until they become huge carbon absorbing and oxygen producing trees. Signage will be erected to indicate directions to the sites.

“The best  time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the next best time, is now”. (Author unknown)
