"Are you guilty — of harbouring alien invasive plants?"
TALK on Alien Invasive Species for "World Environment Day"
3 June 15
World Environment Day the 5th of June

You live here in Eden because you enjoy the numerous ecosystem services this particular part of the country offers such as spectacular natural scenery, bird watching, hiking, photography and many other activities that depend on a healthy environment surrounding you. Yet this paradise is under threat from alien invasive plant species. Weekly the media make us aware of th...e problem but it’s up to the landowners to ensure that aliens are removed as they spread to adjoining properties and eventually due to their highly competitive nature overwhelm the naturally occurring species. It seems that invasive species need to be properly identified by landowners as not everyone is familiar with which plants are involved. By law you may not have Category 1 plants on your property, yet numerous alien species are insidiously multiplying taking over the awesome Fynbos that characterizes the Cape Floral Kingdom — the only floral Kingdom on the planet confined mainly to one single country — the very Fynbos you love to relax in.

Many initiatives are in full swing to eradicate alien plants and we laud them but as individuals we can to do more. I challenge you to remove that beautiful red-berried shrub in your back garden that you don’t even know is an alien invader (Cotoneaster and Pyracantha) and do your bit to contribute towards keeping our stunning natural environment alien-free and species- rich.

Happy World Environment Day and remember to never take more than you need from the circle of life.

To celebrate World Environment Day on the 5th of June, a talk on alien invasive species entitled ‘Are you guilty — of harbouring alien invasive plants?’ will be given by Priscilla Burgoyne, Herbarium Curator: Southern Cape Herbarium on the 3rd of June 2015 at the Garden Route Botanical Garden Offices (49 Caledon Road, George) from 5:30 - 6:30.
