THE DAM & BIRD HIDE (5min, easy):
From the parking area, walk away from the main building up the path that follows the contour of the dam. On the far end of the dam, you will see our Bird Hide. This is a great spot for photography and many bird species which are home to the Botanical Garden.
NATURE TRAIL (10min, easy):
Follow the gravel jeep track north into the Botanical Garden, for approximately 200m, until you are in the large open grass area (the field). To your left you will notice a sluice with a small bridge crossing. Cross the bridge to find the start/end of this short circular trail. The single track criss-crosses streams and over several small bridges. Their are 2 picnic tables on the way. The entire route is graded as easy and can be completed within 10min of leisure walking.
HIKING (moderate - strenuous):
From the forest gate at the most northern point of our Botanical Garden you are able to access the state forest. Various longer hiking trails (incl George Peak, Cradock Peak and Tierkop) can be accessed from here. There is a multitude of trails, jeep & cycling tracks that can be explored.
Please note: if you plan to do any of the full hiking trails, you will require a permit from Witfontein Forestry Department.
Also note that walking alone in the state forest is not advised and incidences have occurred in the past. We suggest you walk in larger groups and inform others of your intended route. Please take note of the below emergency contacts...
